GW Hatchet Advertising Cosponsorship for Student Organizations

The GW Hatchet is now offering registered GW student organizations the opportunity to advertise for free through its new cosponsorship program. The process is simple, but in order to qualify, be sure to complete and submit everything on time.

Qualificiations

In order to qualify, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a registered GW student organization.
  • Be hosting or sponsoring an event that is primarily charitable in nature or benefits the GW community in a positive way.
  • Have a completed application dropped off in person to the GW Hatchet business office no later than one week before the ad run date. The business office is located in our townhouse at 2140 G Street on the first floor and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Have a PDF, JPEG or TIFF file of the ad emailed to ads@gwhatchet.com one week before the ad run date.
  • All submitted ads must be the correct dimensions and format or the application will not be accepted. All free ads shall be 5.75 inches wide and 5.25 inches tall, without exception.

Application Process

PDF application for cosponsorship

We have tried to make the process as simple and as fair as possible. There is just one simple form to complete. Because we are providing the service for free, we do require that all ads be provided to us in the correct format and at the correct size.

The PDF application is available for download here. You can also obtain a copy from the business office.

Not all applications will be accepted. Applications and advertisements are reviewed by the business staff and may be rejected for any reason. The business staff is under no obligation to inform the organization of its reason. If an application is rejected for any of the following reasons, the organization will be given the opportunity to correct the mistake and reapply:

  • incomplete,
  • the wrong size,
  • the wrong format,
  • scheduled to run on a date that another org has already been approved for,
  • or another administrative reason.

If the application is denied because the Hatchet does not wish to cosponsor the event, there will be no opportunity to reapply for the same event. All decisions are final. This does not, however, prevent the same organization for submitting a new application for a different event.

Ads must follow any applicable policies as outlined in The GW Hatchet Media Kit. The Media Kit is available online or as a PDF at www.whatGWreads.com, or in print from our business office.

This program is intended to help smaller organizations reach those they would otherwise not be able to. While applications will be accepted from all registered student orgs, preference will be given to those orgs most in need. Organizations may only be awarded cosponsorship for one ad each semester. In the case of an application being rejected, the org may submit new applications for other events.

Editorial and Business Separation

It is important to acknowledge that The Hatchet's business office operates independently from the editorial office. As is common in newspapers, a separation is maintained to ensure that the paper publishes fair and accurate and information that is in no way affected by its ad sales or customers. This means that the approval or rejection of an application is in no way related to the newspaper's editorial coverage. In fact, editors will not review any application, have no role in their approval or denial and will not know which ads are running under cosponsorship.

Similarly, you will need to contact the editors directly if you would like to have your event covered editorially. Their contact information is available here or you can e-mail news@gwhatchet.com.
