Why We Are What GW Reads
[About The Hatchet]
The GW Hatchet is the independent student newspaper of record at The George Washington University. First published on October 5, 1904, The Hatchet is the second-oldest newspaper in Washington, D.C. in continuous publication after The Washington Post. The GW Hatchet publishes twice each week during the academic year on Mondays and Thursdays.
In 1993, The GW Hatchet successfully incorporated as a non-profit organization and has remained editorially and financially independent from the University since. With a mission to educate students in journalism and business, The Hatchet has enjoyed tremendous success in the past 15 years.
The Hatchet also boasts several prominent and award-winning alumni. Our former students have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes, work as editors at almost every major newspaper in the U.S., own successful businesses and cover major events for national news networks. The Hatchet is not just a newspaper. For many, it is the beginning of a long and successful career.
